The Ferrucciane Celebrations are one of the most renowned summer events in the Pistoia mountains and have been taking place in the towns of Gavinana and Calamecca for over forty years, constituting a real local tradition.
These celebrations link the Pistoia mountains to Florence throughout the centuries. The villages of Gavinana and Calamecca are connected to the Florentine city by a relationship born during the Italian wars of the 16th century. It was in these territories that Francesco Ferrucci, a Florentine leader, fought to save the Republic of Florence from the aims of a large faction of powerful adversaries led by the imperials of Charles V. Francesco Ferrucci defended the Republic of Florence to the last, till he died in Gavinana on August 3, 1530, becoming a hero and an emblem of republican values that will be recalled in the following centuries.
The Ferrucciane Celebrations have always been characterized by the alternation of various moments (playful, cultural, historical). One of the most appreciated is that of the gastronomic offer guaranteed by local economic operators: they have organized themselves to create places dedicated to gastronomy, offering themed and itinerant dinners (Piazza, Public Gardens, Piazzale della Chiesa), which liven up the event.
In recent years, moreover, the unmissable appointment with the Calcio Storico match with the players of the "Associazione 50 minuti" has been added.
