On 10 October 1847, during the celebrations leading to the inauguration of the honorary epigraphs for Francesco Ferrucci, young people and the population of Gavinana sang together the first two stanzas of the Canto which we present here.
CANTO
If the enemy descends
on Italian soil
the war cry
will be “Ferruccio”.
In the name of the strong we grab our sword,
then Italy will triumph.
(All the people)
In the name of the strong we grab our sword,
then Italy will triumph.
The Hero rises again;
Fretting at the sight
of the hated Standard;
he goes towards it.
In the name of the strong we grab our sword
then Italy will triumph.
(All the people)
in the name of the strong we grab our sword
then Italy will triumph.
