This sketch, possibly a study for work to be completed, was drawn on impulse by Massimo D’Azeglio on a large window shutter in the Locanda della Posta in San Marcello Pistoiese, where the artist and patriot from Piedmont stayed for a week in the summer of 1840. After D’Azeglio's stay, the owner of the inn, Pasquale Begliuomini, was sensitive enough to have a new “shutter” made for the window, removing it and preserving the window, detaching and preserving the object enhanced by the artist's hand.
